AI Tools for Irish Farmers: What's Actually Useful Right Now

Farming is one of the busiest jobs in the world. But somewhere in between the early mornings and the long evenings, there is a pile of paperwork that never seems to go away.

Grant applications. Compliance forms. Emails to co-ops and vets. Reports that have to be submitted by a certain date. Record-keeping that you know you should be doing but never have enough time for.

That admin is exhausting. And it takes you away from the actual work — the animals, the land, the machinery.

AI tools will not milk the cows or fix the fencing. But they can take a big chunk of the paperwork off your hands. Here is what is actually useful right now, explained plainly.

What Is an AI Tool, in One Sentence?

An AI tool — like ChatGPT (free at chat.openai.com) — is a website you type into. You ask it questions or give it a task, and it writes back. That is it. You do not need to install anything. You do not need a tech background. You just type.

1. Writing Grant Applications

If you have ever sat down to fill out a BISS, ACRES, or TAMS application, you know the feeling. The language is complicated. The forms are long. And you are never quite sure you are saying the right thing.

A quick reminder of what each scheme is, for anyone who needs it:

AI can help you write the written sections of these applications. The parts where you have to describe what you are doing, why you are doing it, and what the expected benefits are. That is exactly the kind of writing ChatGPT is good at.

Example: Seamus is a dairy farmer in Tipperary applying for ACRES funding. He knows what actions he wants to take on his farm — installing a riparian buffer strip along a stream and planting a new hedgerow — but he is not confident putting it into words. He opens ChatGPT, describes what he is planning in plain language, and asks it to help him write a clear, professional description for the application. It gives him a strong draft he can edit and submit.

Try this:

"I am applying for the ACRES scheme in Ireland. I plan to plant a new hedgerow along the boundary of a 12-acre field and improve a wet area at the edge of the land. Help me write a short, clear description of these actions and why they benefit the environment. Keep the language straightforward."

AI gives you a starting point. You review it, adjust it to match your exact situation, and submit. You are still in control — you are just not starting from a blank page.

2. Keeping Records in Plain Language

Good record-keeping matters for audits, scheme compliance, and just knowing what happened on the farm. But when you have been on your feet since six in the morning, writing up records is the last thing you want to do.

AI can help you keep records quickly and clearly. Instead of writing out a full report yourself, you can just tell ChatGPT what happened that day — in rough, natural language — and ask it to turn it into a clean record you can copy into a notebook or spreadsheet.

Example: Fionnuala is a sheep farmer in Mayo. At the end of a busy day, she types a quick message into ChatGPT: "Treated three ewes for footrot today. Used Footrite spray. Will check again in five days. Also moved the Galway flock to the east field." She asks it to format this as a clear farm record entry with the date. It does it in seconds.

This is much faster than trying to write it up yourself, and the record is clear and dated — exactly what you need if you are ever reviewed.

3. Writing Emails You Are Not Sure How to Word

Not everyone is comfortable writing formal emails. Especially when you need to chase something up, raise a complaint, or ask a question to a co-op, a vet, a contractor, or a department official.

ChatGPT will write the email for you. You just tell it what you need to say.

Example: Brendan is a tillage farmer in Kildare. He needs to write to his co-op to query a payment that looks wrong on his statement. He is not sure how to raise it without sounding accusatory. He tells ChatGPT the situation and asks for a short, polite email that raises the issue clearly. He has a professional message ready in under a minute.

Try this:

"Write a short, polite email to my co-op. I noticed a discrepancy on my most recent statement — the price per tonne for my wheat delivery does not match what I was quoted. I want to ask them to look into it. Keep the tone professional but not aggressive."

You can use this for any email you are putting off because you are not sure how to phrase it.

4. Understanding Documents That Are Hard to Follow

Government documents, scheme rulebooks, and legal letters are often written in a way that makes your eyes glaze over. Dense paragraphs. Long sentences. Technical terms that are never explained.

Here is a simple trick. Open ChatGPT. Copy and paste the section you are struggling to understand. Then type: "Explain this to me in plain English."

ChatGPT will break it down into simple language. It can tell you what the document is saying, what it means for you, and what — if anything — you need to do.

Example: A Kildare tillage farmer receives a long letter from the Department about a change to his scheme conditions. It is three pages of official language. He pastes the key paragraphs into ChatGPT and asks it to summarise what is being said and what action, if any, is required. He has a clear answer in seconds.

This does not replace getting proper advice on serious legal or financial matters. But for a first read of a confusing document, it saves you a lot of time and stress.

5. Getting a Quick Answer Without Waiting for a Callback

You have a question. It is not urgent enough to call Teagasc about right now, but you would like to know the answer. With AI, you can just ask.

Wondering about stocking rates for a new paddock? Ask. Not sure about the rotation timing for a cover crop? Ask. Want a general sense of what soil test results mean before your next advisory visit? Ask.

AI will give you a general answer based on publicly available knowledge. It is like asking a knowledgeable friend — useful for getting your head around something before you talk to an expert.

This is important though: AI does not know your farm. It gives general guidance, not personalised advice. Always verify anything that matters — health decisions for your animals, scheme compliance questions, chemical applications — with your vet, your Teagasc advisor, or the relevant department. AI is a starting point, not a final answer.

6. Weather and Planning Apps Worth Knowing

A quick mention of a couple of useful tools that are not exactly AI in the ChatGPT sense, but are worth having on your phone:

These are simple tools, but the farmers who use them consistently find them genuinely useful.

Where to Start

Pick the thing that takes up the most time for you right now. Is it grant paperwork? Emails you are putting off? Record-keeping you are behind on?

Start there. Open ChatGPT (it is free, you just need to create an account with an email address — it takes two minutes). Type what you need. See what it gives you.

You do not need to become a tech person to use this. You just need to try it once.

The paperwork does not have to follow you around anymore.
